READ MORE ON TRAVEL GUIDE FOR TANZANIAThe waters surrounding the island of Zanzibar, Mafia, and Pemba, and also the coastal metropolis of Dar es Salaam, present many thrilling opportunities to hone your skills against some of the toughest fish. Whether you are an amateur or a well-experienced angler, the thrill and excitement of getting a bite and the struggle to land a fish that is determined to escape is truly unforgettable.
As you will learn on your aquatic tour of Tanzania, the maritime authorities have taken special measures to ensure sustainable fishing, and there are firm regulations in place to ensure the protection marine ecology on game fishing excursions in the country and also for the conservation of the delicate coral reefs and their many denizens.
Accordingly, the boats that take you out to the sites where the fish teem are well-equipped with echo sounders, fishfinders and GPS navigational instruments. All other IGFA and other international regulations are carefully complied with, and your AfricanMecca assigned skipper on board the boat will direct and assist your efforts at all times.
The boats carry all the equipment you could possibly need, but you are free to carry your own supplies such as light tackle, spinning gear and fly fishing. Angling off the coast of Tanzania is permitted only in deeper waters so anchors can be dropped without damaging the coral. Boats also fish by trolling with 2 to 7 lines trailing from them, but you could also request to try bottom fishing.
Most boats have the necessary outriggers and tower to maximize on your angling opportunities. Fishing trips in Tanzania are characterized by tag and release regulations, and you are permitted to keep your prized bill catch under only very special circumstances.
The Indian Ocean off the East African coast offers fishing at any time of the year; though, if you intend to catch a specific kind of fish, it is best to travel in specific seasons when they are known to be present. Fish like kingfish, dorados, barracudas, giant trevally, ruby snappers, almaco jacks and wahoo are found all the year round. But fish like yellowfin tuna, billfish like blue, stripped and black marlins, sailfish, broadbill, swordfish, shortbill spearfish are only seasonally found from August to March, and are detailed under each fishing destination AfricanMecca serves.
The channel between Pemba and Zanzibar affords as a world class fishing expedition destination with depths of over 820 meters while the deep sea waters of Tanzania are best fished off the coast of the Rufiji Delta near Kilwa extending to Lindi, Njovi ,Nyuni and Songo Songo Islands including Fanjove, Mafia Island, Latham Island off Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo and other divergent locations. Should you holiday in Tanzania during the oceanic migratory season, you are likely to spot whale sharks feeding on plankton and. humpbacked whales too.
