WHERE TO STAY IN PEMBA
There are two main accommodations on the island, both of which offer you tranquility and seclusion. The first is Fundu Lagoon, a deluxe mid-range Beach Tier 2 resort, located on the southwest section of the island affording a highly personalized and intimate boutique experience for discerning guests.
Sited in the northwestern region of the island is the Manta Resort, a value Beach Tier 3, most suited to the travelers who are more restricted on their budget while touring Pemba Island and are willing to make do with comfortable living spaces, wholesome meals and friendly service. The beach at Manta Resort is also better than at Fundu Lagoon; though the service and quality of accommodation Fundu Lagoon exceeds and makes up the difference.
On your Tier 2 stay at Fundu Lagoon, you can expect exceptional living spaces, sumptuous meals and bespoke services where your every requirement is wisely catered to (read more on why you should visit Pemba). The resort has a collection of 18 tented rooms each offering distinct vistas of the Indian Ocean. Choose from rooms in three specifications. The Standard Rooms and Suites can each sleep up to 3 AfricanMecca guests and are located somewhat higher up the hill. But if you are looking for more spacious rooms for your dream seaside trip in Africa, then you could opt for the Superior Suites.
This room is furnished with a large double bed. Two other guests can sleep on the higher level deck. Parasols shade the daybeds where you can relax and soak up the warm sunshine of the tropics or take a lazy dip in your own private plunge pool. The normal suites also have a private plunge pool. None of the rooms have air-conditioning; though in-room fans are available along with the cooling breezes of the ocean that wafts through the canvas opening.
At Tier 3, The Manta Resort costs less than Fundu Lagoon and has a Swahili rustic ambience with stone-paved floors, thatched roofs, whitewashed limestone walls and furniture crafted out of rough-hewn wood. They have 20 rooms in all in four categories. The Standard Garden Rooms are sited in the greens of the lodge and are suitable for two guests each. If you are traveling in Pemba Island with family or in a group of four guests, opt for the Superior Garden Rooms.
These units each include two interlinked rooms and offer part views of the ocean through the lush garden. Choose the Seafront Villas if you prefer a room that offers sweeping views of the turquoise sea. Manta Resort has an inimitable room beneath the Indian Ocean that is suitable for marine adventurous guests or honeymooners – “The Underwater Room”. This unit comprises of 3 levels with the bedroom of glass walls on the lowest level located under water.
This singular unit that floats in the anchored bay also has a lounge and ensuite bathroom on the upper floor while the topmost level is the terrace. Climb the steps to this level and enjoy languorous days bathing in the sun with no other person in sight.
