SNORKELING TOUR EXPERIENCE IN PEMBA WITH AFRICANMECCA
The light filtering through the water lends an ethereal ambience to the vibrant colors of the living coral and their many inhabitants. An expert snorkel instructor or divemaster will guide AfricanMecca guests through the rudiments of snorkeling or particular tips you must follow while exploring the reefs. There are many snorkel and dive sites around Pemba Island that you can explore while on your tour of Eastern Africa.
The Shimba Hills is a tranquil underwater valley that extends to a depth of 12 meters and abounds with rousing creatures that have intriguing names like red tooth triggerfish, red sea sweetlips, fusiliers, anthias to name a few. You could also try the Scorpions Secret, a reef that has depths ranging from 5 to 18 meters and is known for the light currents than run through it. You will enjoy identifying giant frogfish, leaffish, lionfish and many more as they try to hide or camouflage among the coral.
Snorkeling at varied reefs on different days is another unique experience that you can have on your trip to Pemba Island. House Reef close to Manta Resort is set at the depth of 5 meters, offering a stretch of plain sand surrounded by many coral bommies. Look for octopus, large eye squid, nudibranchs, a kind of sea slugs and many other colorful tropical fish.
If you were to take a 30-45 minute boat ride south from the northern tip of the island, you would reach the Njao Gap that falls between Pemba and Njao islands. There are varied snorkeling and diving sites here that range from 5 to 40 meters with wavering landscapes like coral gardens, hills and straight walls with both hard and soft corals. You could sight many fascinating marine creatures like dogtooth tuna, giant trevally, napoleon wrasse, titan triggerfish, green turtles and many more.
The Fundu Gap with its prime snorkeling sites lying between Njao and Fundu islands are a must visit on your snorkeling excursion in Tanzania. The Gap is located on the southern side of Njao Island and can be reached with a boat ride of an hour from the northern tip. The reefs here also lie at depths of 5 to 40 meters and the waters allow for excellent visibility. You may spot eagle rays here. These are only some of the fascinating experiences of your aquatic holiday to Pemba Island.
