MOUNT KILIMANJARO COSTS – DEMYSTIFYING INCLUSIONS & EXTRAS
With very expensive operators, you may be paying for a brand but also equipment that is unnecessary on a Kilimanjaro climb, and for the dubious advantage of being led by foreign renowned mountaineers with their high fees who make a limited number of climbs on Kilimanjaro each year between Everest-style epics where their skills are really necessary.
Tanzanian seasoned guides have spent decades on the mountain and made hundreds of successful summits. They are familiar with the dangers inherent in its unique character on a regular basis. An East African climbing expedition of the Kilimanjaro demands fitness, endurance, experience and common sense rather than expensive “luxuries” and technological fixes. Do you need a portable defibrillator or hyperbaric oxygen chamber if you are sensibly fit and well-acclimatized? Better to descend without delay.
Oxygen masks on the final ascent not only look ridiculous where children and pensioners are trekking bare-faced, but invite the onset of life-threatening forms of Acute Mountain Sickness. It would be more sensible and more fun to spend the money on a preparatory trek on Mount Meru to allow your body to adjust to air pressure at higher altitudes.
Will you really enjoy a shower in a small tent in freezing conditions in a howling gale at high altitudes? Will you even have the energy and will to be butt naked in high altitude freezing conditions? If you still prefer a shower on your climb, we can arrange this too with prior notice. Costs for a Kilimanjaro trek include accommodations from your first night at the basecamp in Moshi, on-mountain camps to the last night in Moshi on completion, all meals, park fees, transfers and extra acclimatization days on the mountain.
No one is allowed to climb the mountain without a KINAPA approved guide, assistants and porters provided by a registered tour operator. Your costs include fees paid to the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority for entrance, camping, daily park fees, park staff and basic rescue facilities/services. Even our porters and support staff pay their fees for entry into the park.
Uhuru Trails by AfricanMecca provide a personal, private support guide for each climber, dedicated and group porters and a mountain chef-cook, who are all experienced, well-trained, well-equipped and well-paid more than industry standard. Other operators budget for one or two guides between four to five climbers.
Some cheaper operators economize by misusing their staff, overloading them, paying minimal wages and exposing them to harsh climactic conditions without proper clothing, food or shelter. Some of their cheap operator porters and unproven guides rely solely on tips from climbers rather than set remuneration for each climb they do.
With AfricanMecca, our team staff are paid a fix and more than market value remuneration, and tips are welcomed by our mountain staff team as in any hospitality service received elsewhere in the world. Uhuru Trails by AfricanMecca train staff to take pride in their “Three S Mantra”. For them, the key issues are Safety, Skill, and Sincerity. You are safe in our hands, at all times.
