GUIDE ON BEHO BEHO IN TANZANIA
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Beho Beho
Beho Beho is a unique luxury safari haven set amidst the cooling breezes of the highlands above wild bush-lands in Nyerere National Park (Selous), Southern Tanzania, which is an area of over 30,000 sq km where human settlement is prohibited, and only a narrow northern strip is designated for photography tourism.
Much is private concessionary land, but the Northern highlands, flood plain and Rufiji River have been opened to permit ecologically friendly explorations by a few select tourist camps and lodges offering premier to value accommodations for vacations in Tanzania with photographic game viewing drives, boating and walking safaris.
The reserve is wild and remote, one of the largest in the world, having been protected since 1896 and declared a hunting reserve in 1905. In 1982, Selous became a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a great branding moment for Tanzania. It is home to large concentrations of elephant, giraffe, crocodile, African wild dog and hippopotamus. Reports also suggest between 250 and 500 black rhinoceros and vulnerable cheetah.
But because it is so remote from the Northern Tanzania wilderness areas, few visitors venture out to tour Selous; however, informed AfricanMecca guests jump at the first opportunity to visit Selous for a differentiating experience to the common clichés of northern Tanzania national parks such as Ngorongoro and Serengeti. There are few protective patrols and minimal authorative check on the actual numbers.
Because of its great size, much of its fauna and flora are quite widely dispersed through a variety of utterly pristine wilderness microclimates, ranging from deciduous miombo woodlands to exposed savannah. There is a wide range of bird species and a good chance of spotting previously unrecorded flora, insects, reptiles and even birds on your African safari.
Accommodation At Beho Beho
Beho Beho was one of the first accommodations to be built in Selous, comprising 8 large, stone built guest cottages with palm thatch roofs, individual homes from home looking out over beautiful vistas and catching every breeze, where guests can relax after their demanding days on wildlife tour in Tanzania. Each suite opens direct on to the verandah without interrupting the stunning valley views, which you may examine through a tripod mounted telescope. A secure front canvas and mosquito netted curtain can be closed at night. The camp is family owned. Family members assume varied roles in securing your enjoyment of this exclusive African bush holiday dwelling.
Comfort is the keynote, with king-sized double beds, huge cosy curl-up chairs and even a Zanzibari carved day-bed for an afternoon siesta time. The lounge contains a writing desk with complimentary stationary and a combination safe. A dressing room leads to a bathroom with open-air shower, flush toilet and hand-basins, supplied with complimentary toiletries, a hair dryer and bathrobes. Water is from a borehole, so bottled water is supplied for drinking. Solar power supplies lighting and limited hot water. A generator powers UK-style 3-pin charging points. Hand-laundry services are standard.
The camp is ideal for guests who require e-communication in the wilds of Tanzania, having satellite Internet, email and Skype in the study area for guests (read more on where else to stay in Nyerere National Park (Selous)). A Beho Beho safari is not recommended for children under 12 years. There is a tree house available for anyone staying more than four nights, but this must be pre-booked via AfricanMecca.
Safari At Beho Beho
At Beho Beho, many Tanzanian tour activities are possible which would not be permitted in a more tightly regulated national park in Tanzania. The very high quality of the guides means that you can comfortably indulge in walking safaris, game spotting drives and boat trips on Lake Tagalala, getting close to your wildlife and floral objectives in this little frequented paradise with minimal restrictions.Choose two activities each day on your AfricanMecca itinerary. Walking safaris in Tanzania are best taken early in the morning, preferably before a late breakfast. This is when you may see a Rufous sunbird sipping nectar with its long, curved beak. A nearby hippo hide lets you watch the thickset pachyderms in safety as they return from a night grazing to spend the day in water. Anyone in the open between a hippo and its wallow would infuriate the beast.
An unexpected facet of travel in Africa is revealed in World War One trenches where von Lettow Vorbeck stood valiantly against 300,000 Allied troops with less than 14,000 German and Askari fighters – yes, Selous has a historical story to tell!
Late afternoon game drives in specially built viewing vehicles with shady roofs and open sides, give you chance to see grazing mammals such as giraffe and impala returning to their water holes with ambitious predators slinking along behind; African wild dogs, lions, jackals and hyenas being much in evidence (read more on when is the best time to visit Nyerere National Park (Selous)).
A Lake Tagalala safari in a metal boat with outboard engine, driven by a guide who knows the water intimately, reveals vast numbers of water birds as well as crocodiles and hippos but also terrestrial wildlife approaching to drink from its banks.
Dining At Beho Beho
In keeping with the Bailey’s family home ethos, at Beho Beho, everything is fully inclusive, so AfricanMecca guests may indulge freely in all services without extra charges. A welcome drink, appetizing lunch, sundowner cocktail and relaxing hot shower will welcome you in style on arrival at the start of your exploratory Selous trip, followed by a campfire dinner.A central bar, open-sided dining room and lounge are served by a sophisticated cocktail lounge and a trademark billiards room. There is also a swimming pool and large outdoor deck. Food is infinitely variable, times, sites and menus being moveable for your convenience. There are secluded dining nooks for romantic twosomes, the Eagle’s Nest for private formal meals and a family style dining table for companionable communal dinners with your hosts, other guests and your native and imported Tanzanian safari guides at Beho Beho.
Typically, Tanzanian morning tea will be served on your verandah, followed by open-air breakfast in the central areas, with hot dishes cooked on request. All food is freshly made and sourced from farms just outside the reserve or Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Breakfasts and lunches can be brought forward or delayed to fit in with your Africa trip activities or picnics and outdoor dining can be arranged. Evening meals can be served in the bush in the company of an excellent guide who is your protector and entertainer.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
We had an absolutely unforgettable time. Both our guides were outstanding with so much knowledge. At Nyerere National Park (Selous), we found a group of wild dogs cooling off near a pool of water. The safari was everything we had hoped for.
Gunnar and Liz Kristiansen - Ontario, Canada
I booked my safari holiday through AfricanMecca. They were the most helpful company I have ever dealt with and I work within the travel industry. I had the most amazing time. The holiday went as clockwork with no hitches anywhere.
Shelley Roberts - Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom
AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
