The Highlands Ngorongoro by Asilia is a resplendent safari accommodation that offers an exceptional distinct experience in northern Tanzania. The camp operates in the Ngorongoro Highlands, an area that is prized amongst discerning travelers for its extraordinary volcanic landscape that creates a remarkable wilderness to discover the natural and cultural wonders of East Africa.
The Highlands Ngorongoro stands apart from other camps in both location and design. Guests enjoy being miles away from other accommodations, and when compared to other camps, the property sits at the highest elevation within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, giving our guests unsurpassed views, perfect for both sunrise and sunset vistas.
The Highlands Ngorongoro Camp features a contemporary design that is quite unexpected in the African bush — eight geometric-shaped canvas and glass dome tents, lounge with communal wood-burning fireplace encircled by a communal sofa, dining area designed with local wood and many other subtle details that give you a truly unique hilltops vacation experience.
The interior design of each dome tent is a superb blend of classic and modern safari elements, and the most unique design features are the round “skylights” that are built into the canvas. Raw wood has been used for the floors, walls and ceilings to create an intimate, romantic space. The sleeping area features a king-size bed, bay windows, nightstand with reading light, wood-burning fireplace, wardrobe, personal lockbox, chairs and side table. Black and white photographs and animal prints bring Africa indoors.
The ensuite bathroom is tastefully designed with flush toilet, shower with hot running water and vanity. Your tent has a wood deck with safari chairs and table as well as a covered entry area and wood door. Parents who wish to bring their children on a family safari with AfricanMecca at Ngorongoro Crater will love the family tent as well as the activities for youngsters. Children should be at least 16 years old to partake of the hikes, but children as young as five years old can spend time with their parents on game drives and cultural visits.
Each morning at The Highlands Camp, you awaken to a soft, golden glow filtering into your tent. After freshening up, you walk to the dining area for a divine breakfast, or you may choose to have a picnic breakfast in the bush. Our guide meets with you to discuss the day’s schedule, and you climb aboard a custom 4x4 safari vehicle to begin your tour of Ngorongoro Crater (40 minutes away), known for offering the densest concentration of animals in Africa.
In addition to the “Big Five” — lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos, you may see hartebeests, zebras, hippos, elands, wildebeests to name a few, as well as porcupines, dik-diks, hyrax and other smaller creatures. The craters and calderas add an unparalleled interest to the topography, and ancient ash deposits enrich the soil to produce a seemingly endless supply of grasses and other food sources for the herbivores, which in turn serve as prey animals to many predatory species, offering almost endless opportunities for photographers, both amateur and professional.
After a morning of game driving across the crater floor, our guide takes you to a distinct location for a picnic lunch. For an even more amazing bush meal experience, we recommend a hot lunch prepared on the crater floor on special requests. After satisfying your appetite, you continue your exploration of Ngorongoro Crater. In the early evening, you can trip back to camp for sundowners and dinner.
On the days when you do not have a crater floor game drive, AfricanMecca guests can wish to partake of a birding safari, Maasai village tour and activities in the highlands such as climbing the Olmoti Volcano (2-3 hours experience) and a descent hike of the Empakaai Crater (half day experience) to view the lake and its inhabitants, the pink flamingos. The Highlands is also perfect honeymooners for its intimate, personalized and romantic luxurious setting of Tanzania

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.

EAST AFRICA SAFARI BOOKING TRIP IDEA FOR THE HIGHLANDS NGORONGORO IN NGORONGORO CRATER TANZANIA
When staying at The Highlands Ngorongoro in Ngorongoro Crater (Rim & Forest Areas), we recommend combining it with your Northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Serengeti (wildebeest migration). End your trip with a Swahili cultural tour and beach holiday in Zanzibar.
You may optionally extend out to offbeat parks in Southern and Western Tanzania such as Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha or Katavi ending with a chimpanzee trekking safari at Gombe or Mahale by the relaxing Lake Tanganyika.
