Located within 40 minutes’ travel from Kigali, Ntarama Church is one of the memorials established to pay homage to the innocents slaughtered by Hutu extremists. The memorial, a Catholic church, explains how the sanctity of the church was violated as the extremists murdered more than 5,000 Tutsis in the most barbaric and horrifying ways possible. Entry into this memorial is free of charge, but donations are appreciated and there is a small collection box near the entrance.Tutsi refugees hid in the church complex and its nearby kitchen, believing the Hutu militants would not attack them there. Unfortunately, they were flushed out by grenades and gunfire before being executed inside the church. On your memorial tour you will see bloodstained clothing draped over the pews, and skulls and bones that were collected later and stored in a separate shed. Some of the coffins contain the bones of entire families, which will soon be interred in a mass grave in the church courtyard. Every building in the complex, including the kitchen, red brick church, and the Sunday school structure, bear scars of the grenade attacks. Bloodstains mark the spots on the walls where children were killed by smashing, while other artifacts further tell a deeply disturbing story. While children are not prohibited in the memorial, the graphic nature of the displays makes this visit more suitable for adults only. This Kigali site is not recommended for families with kids.
