Niyo Art Gallery was established by musician Niyonsenga Pacifique to help the underprivileged street children in Kigali. Pacifique grew up as a destitute child in the city and received the friendship and support of a Canadian benefactor, Bruno, who helped him get an education and achieve a better life. Pacifique has dedicated his life to supporting kids in similar situations through the media of art, song, music, and dance. Donations to the gallery are passed on to these kids, helping to pay for food, education, medicine, and other daily essentials.Children benefiting from this support give presentations to patrons and vacationers visiting the gallery, playing drums and performing dances. For a unique experience during your stay in Kigali, why not take part in the dancing? It’s easy to get caught up in the kids’ infectious laughter and enthusiasm as they dance happily, putting their troubles behind them for a while. Pacifique, an accomplished painter, is also working toward helping grow the artistic talents of these children. While touring the gallery, you’ll be able to see some of their creations and perhaps purchase one or two to display back home; not only can you help popularize Rwandan art, but your contributions will prove invaluable for the children. Spend an experiential night or two in the rooms at the center and you will have the opportunity to truly understand the lives of the children better.
