Visitors to Kigali are often amazed by the city’s peaceful, safe ambience and touched by the warmth and friendliness of the people. Often, one of the first questions they ask their AfricanMecca Safaris-assigned guide is, “How could something as horrible as genocide gave happened here?” Your questions may be answered at the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. Opened in April 2004, ten years after the terrible massacre, the memorial was created by Aegis Trust and has three permanent exhibits.
A complete tour will take two to three hours, beginning with an explanation of the events that led to the tragic 100 days during which close to a million ethnic Tutsis lost their lives. The memorial includes various audiovisual exhibits to explain how the former state instigated the tragedy, convincing gullible people that their neighbors were evil and must be exterminated. Among the heartbreaking images are life-sized photographs of child victims, each with a name and intimate details about their favorite things.
Visitors can view the common graves of more than 250,000 innocents, as well as the memorial wall with the names of victims etched on it. This Kigali memorial opens at 8:00 a.m., and entry is allowed until 4:00 p.m. Photography is permitted outside but not inside. End your tour by spending a few quiet moments of reflection in the gardens.
