Rwanda’s elusive golden monkeys are among the rare primates that inhabit Volcanoes National Park. During your wilderness holiday in the reserve you can choose to foot travel the trail that will lead to the area populated by these beautiful creatures, who sport a striking coat of orange and black. These monkeys live in bamboo forests at the higher elevations of the Virunga mountains, as well as at the foot of Sabyinyo Mountain. Given the scientific name of Cercopithecus mitis kandti, the golden monkey is considered to be a subspecies of the more familiar Sykes monkey.Should you hope to visit them on your primate vacation in Rwanda, do remember to work with your consultant at AfricanMecca Safaris to procure the necessary permit. Your trek to their habitat will begin after breakfast, at 7:30 a.m. Those who need the assistance of porters to carry photographic and other equipment can hire them at the base point of the trek. Guests are divided into groups of 8 each and an expert guide is assigned to each cohort. As you hike along the trail, enjoy the beauty of the flora and spot some of the stunning 178 bird species that Volcanoes National Park is famous for. As you will learn on your trip, you could be viewing one of the two troops that are habituated to human presence, the largest numbering about 80 to 100 members. These troops are used to human onlookers, and you can therefore spend time near them without frightening them away.
When you near the monkeys, your guide will point them out in the trees and you can watch as they swing above, foraging for food. Take all the photographs you want, but be warned that they are quick and active and make for challenging subjects. On rare occasions, you may even spot these fascinating creatures grooming one another on the forest floor. You’re allowed to spend an hour in their company before it is time to trek back to the park headquarters.
