VIEW PRICES FOR YOUR NAIROBI CITY & DAY TOURS - BOOK IT TODAY!The Kenya National Archives was created through an act of the Kenyan Parliament in 1965 with a mission to preserve significant public records and national documents, as well as a large collection of African arts, such as basketry, pottery, traditional weaponry, masks, ornamental art, sculptures, paintings, beadwork, textiles and photography.
The site itself is a historical preservation effort, as the building was constructed in 1931 to serve as the Nairobi headquarters of National & Grindlays Bank and was recognized as one of Nairobi’s most iconic landmarks at the time. Some of the oldest and rarest documents at the archive are the 17th century records, reports and diaries of the Church Missionary Society. Of particular note within the archives is the Joseph Murumbi Gallery, the largest collection of Africana on the continent, containing more than 50,000 publications, records and artifacts.
In 2008, the art collection of Alan Donovan of the African Heritage House was added to the archives, and a second gallery houses a historical collection of Kenyan artifacts that date back to the pre-colonial period of 1890 to modern day. The diversity and historical value of the archive collections led to the 2011 Library of the Year award.
