WHERE TO STAY IN WESTERN MASAI MARA

The western zone of Masai Mara primarily includes accommodations on private leased Maasai lands outside the public reserve with the exception of Bateleur and Kichwa Tembo Camps that are set in a very small private andbeyond concession that allows access to night game drives and bush walks. All accommodations in the western section offer game drives in the Mara Triangle areas of the public reserve - sometimes known as the Mara Conservancy under the Trans Mara Maasai Council.



In the western zone, we recommend Sanctuary Olonana for Tier 1, Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp for Tier 2 and Mara Siria Camp for Tier 3. As a high-end, premium accommodation Sanctuary Olonana offers AfricanMecca guests a luxurious Kenya safari vacation experience. The camp overlooks the Mara River where hippos keep you entertained with their unique behaviors. The 14 boutique tents with river view decks include 12 standard tents and 2 honeymoon/family suites. The four-poster bed and wooden floors create a warm, comfy ambience that gives you much-needed relief and rest after a day of wilderness exploration. The other furnishings give you cozy places to curl up with a good book, update your travel journal and enjoy engaging conversation. Other Tier 1 options we recommend are Bateleur Camp and Angama Mara.

The mid-range Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp allows for a maximum of 80 guests in 20 Superior, 8 Superior View and 12 Classic Tents, with a total of 40 canvas rooms. African artwork stands upon pale wood furnishings, highlighting the incredible craftsmanship of local people. Private verandahs offer ample seating for wildlife observation. Your ensuite bathroom has all of the necessary modern conveniences, including flush toilet, wash basin and shower.



Kichwa’s superior tents were completely rebuilt in 2014 and have a fresh neo-look while the 12 Classic Tents were left as originally built – this may change in the future. Kilima Camp and Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge are excellent Tier 2 lodging options that offer superlative plains and river vistas from the escarpment in addition to admirable service, food and lodging.

For AfricanMecca frugal guests, we recommend Mara Siria Camp, a Tier 3 accommodation sited on the picturesque site on the Oloololo Escarpment with scenic vistas of the Masai Mara plains and the meandering river below. The camp offer 14 accommodations in three categories i.e. the misnomer luxury tents on a grounded platform with a tarp roof and floor, the non-frill deluxe tents on a decked platform with a thatched roof, and for those who require the wellbeing of sleeping around stone walls, the roundish African-style cottages with a conical thatched roof are also available! Alternate Tier 3 options are Mara River Camp and Mara West.
