WHERE TO STAY IN CENTRAL MASAI MARA
To curb and limit high inflow of conservancy guests, a park fee restriction is in place for those staying in private conservancies where they have to pay double park fees i.e. their own conservancy fee and a second one for the public reserve. The central zone, though, is an excellent year-round destination for viewing resident species including territorial felines from lions, cheetahs, leopards to elusive civets, caracals and more.
At Tier 1, we recommend Governors’ IL Moran Camp due to its superlative and strategic location of being one of the first pioneer camps setup in the heart of the Masai Mara. The up-market accommodation features 10 luxury tents that are nestled within a riverine forest. The décor features Victorian styling that is reminiscent of times when Kenya was largely undiscovered. Your tent has a comfy king-size bed made of natural tree-log, writing desk and en-suite bathroom with free-standing bathtub, shower, flush toilet and two-sink vanity. We also recommend Naibor Camp, Mara Ngenche Safari Camp and both the Ngerende in the Wild Lakeview and Riverview as boutique Tier 1 accommodations.
Our recommendation for guests who desire a mid-range accommodation is the sister camp branded as Little Governor’s Camp. To reach this Tier 2 camp, you travel by a small boat across the Mara River before walking through a delightful lush forest. The 17 guest tents provide thirty-four beds for guests. The tents have a traditional, yesteryear theme attached to it with a comfy bed, nightstand and ensuite bathroom.
The location of Little Governor’s is superlative and authentically wild. It is sited next to waterhole-cum-swampy marsh and utilized by various ungulates, bovines, pachyderms and also predators as corridor to access various parts of the surrounding wilderness. It is not uncommon to find elephants, impalas, zebras and buffalos foraging around the campgrounds. For AfricanMecca guests seeking Tier 2 accommodation with the Mara River views, we recommend Governor's Camp, Rekero Camp and Sentinel Mara Camp.
For a modest accommodation that stretches your tour dollars, we recommend Entim Camp, a Tier 3 camp that is sited at the meeting point of the Talek River and Mara River in the main reserve. The camp has exceptionally only 10 admirable non-frill tents with classic, traditional furnishings. The ensuite bathroom has a shower, flush toilet and wash basin.
The common areas have a dual lounge and indoor dining tents next to each other covered by an additional tarp. The lounge tent is intimate in fostering a colonial ambience with its speckled leather sofas, antelope horns as decorative pieces on coffee tables, safari chests along with perched chandeliers and traditional lanterns illuminating your dining area.
