OLDERKESI IN SOUTHERN MASAI MARA
Olderkesi Conservancy is situated between Masai Mara National Reserve and Loita Hills along the southeastern border of the reserve. The conservancy was formed when the Olderkesi Group Ranch set aside 24,700 acres (10,000 hectares) of land in one of the most remote areas of the Masai Mara ecosystem. As such, the conservancy draws few AfricanMecca visitors due to the limited amount of accommodations present in this expanse. Olderkesi is the result of the initial work done by the Cottars Wildlife Conservation Trust that was set up by its parent camp – Cottar's 1920's Camp.
Since the conservancy was introduced, wildlife populations have increased. The most common sightings in the conservancy are big cats, such as lions, leopards and cheetahs. Elephants are also frequently located. Although more elusive, African wild dogs and rhinos have also been logged in Olderkesi (read more on when is the best time to go to Masai Mara).
As with other conservancies that border Masai Mara National Reserve, Olderkesi Conservancy has introduced an effective wildlife management strategy by combining habitat and animal protection with economic and social benefits to local communities. The income that is generated by safari activities in the conservancy support community projects, such as healthcare and education. To advance the quality of life for the local Maasai tribe, the conservancy hires its staff from the villages to work as security scouts and camp staff.
In following best practices of low density experiences at Olderkesi, the conservancy has a maximum of 20 rooms (1 room per over 1200 acres) in between two-member accommodations i.e. Cottar's 1920's Camp, Cottar’s Private Homestead and Enkewa Mara Camp. Note the two accommodations at Cottars have private access to their own 6000-acre wilderness that it does not share with any other accommodation in Olderkesi.
