AUTHENTIC SAFARIS & PERSONALIZED TOURS IN LAKE NAIVASHA WITH AFRICANMECCA
With more than 450 avian species, Lake Naivasha is a world-class destination in Kenya for birding travelers. Resident species are recorded year-round while migratory species can be seen from October through March. A good concentration of the avi-fauna is long-tailed and great cormorants, as well as pink-backed pelicans. Soaring high in the cliffs around the lake, though, are some of the most iconic African birds – fish eagles.
These magnificent raptor creatures perch on the trees around the lake to watch for prey fish just below the surface. Once a fish is located, the fish eagle spreads its powerful four to six-foot black wings and skillfully grasps the fish with its talons. If the fish is especially large, you may see the fish eagle drag the fish across the surface of the water or even land in the water and paddle to shore.
Fish eagles, owls and other birds of prey also prey on hatched crocodiles, flamingos, turtles, rock hyraxes and other small animals, and they are also known for stealing food from other birds, such as goliath herons. Your lakeside adventure vacation with AfricanMecca doesn’t stop there though. You may also observe white-fronted bee-eaters, grey-capped warblers, brimstone canaries, great white egrets, black-lored babblers and many other birds in the lake, brush, cliffs and woodlands.
Larger African species are also found at Naivasha, such as hippos wallowing in the lake and zebras, elands, waterbucks, buffalos and other herbivores that come to drink and graze. Within the acacia woodlands, you may see giraffes, colobus and vervet monkeys, bushbaby and other forest-dwellers, and the elusive leopard is also known to prowl for prey around Lake Naivasha.
The most distinct way to see Lake Naivasha is on a boating excursion. These excursions get you right in the middle of all of the action on the lake, and we can arrange in the morning or afternoon for your boating tour of one of Kenya’s most beautiful Great Rift Valley lake. AfricanMecca also recommends a nature walk so that you may have an up-close-and-personal experience with the smaller life forms of Naivasha, as well as forest, plains and lake fauna.
Walks can be arranged on Crescent Island and private conservancies like Oserian and Loldia, and you may want to incorporate a bush picnic into your outing. On the conservancies, you may also partake of day and night game drives, and we recommend a game drive before dinner to see nocturnal fauna like long-tailed mongooses, eagle owls, bat-eared foxes, nightjars and other wildlife that display unique behaviors as the sun sets.
You may also explore Lake Naivasha on horseback. Lake Naivasha also gives you access to spectacular day trips to local communities and schools, flower farm visits, Elsamere Museum, Lake Elementaita, Hell’s Gate and Lake Nakuru, Crater Lake Game Sanctuary and much more!

BEST TIME TO VISIT LAKE NAIVASHA
All things considered, we recommend the dry season as the best time to visit Naivasha, and also when combined with a safari to Masai Mara to view the wildebeest migration from August to October.
