Sheltered in a grove of tamarind trees, Satao Camp in the mighty Tsavo East National Park comprises of a collection of rustic structures with makuti roofs supported by sisal and boroti poles, arranged in a half circle around a watering hole where diverse animals come to drink and bathe.
On your Satao trip to this part of East Africa, you might wake one morning to the sight of elephants splashing water over themselves or gazelles sipping after a hearty meal of green grass in the camp wild lawns or even lions quenching their thirst in the early morning before strategizing their hunt.
Satao does not have fences so giraffes wandering through the camp along with impalas, zebras, monkeys and baboons are a common occurrence. You will be welcomed on your deluxe vacation in south-eastern Kenya in the open, main reception area adorned with woven rugs displaying ethnic prints. This mid-range camp also has a common lounge that will charm you with its pastoral and light furniture fashioned out of poles. Its watchtower avails interactive views of the waterhole and landscape far beyond.
Satao Camp has 20 guest tents in all, 16 of which are standard tents while the other 4 are suites. Constructed of eco-green canvas with netting for the windows, the tents have double, triple or twin beds. Erected on a flat surface or elevated platform, each tent has a rollback, zippable entrance augmented with its wide patio furnished with safari chairs and daybeds. It also includes racks with shelves so you can unpack for your AfricanMecca homely travels.
Your tent comes with chairs for sitting while the natural-tone rugs add an element of cultural coziness. The ensuite bathroom is at the back through a wooden door or canvas zipper. It includes a shower, single or double basins and quality toiletries for your use. Enjoy the experience of an authentic bush shower when the camp’s attendants bring hot water and fill the overhead bucket for you. Physically challenged guests will find the ground platform tents easily accessible with wheelchairs. For those who prefer a secluded experience, request for tents at either end of the camp.
You will have your meals in the camp's dining area that also overlooks the watering hole and the 200-year-old tamarind tree outside. You will dine on a selection of international and traditional dishes including vegetarian options. As you enjoy a buffet lunch al-fresco under shaded trees, you might see a herd of impala stop by for a meal of their own. Buffet dinners are served indoors and later, you will be escorted to your tent by an attendant after warming up by the campfire.
Turn in for the night on your wild tour in Tsavo East Park to the thrilling sounds of lions roaring, elephants trumpeting and owls hooting.
While your AfricanMecca adventure begins with your stay at the Satao Camp, you can take it further by going on game drives to explore the unusual beauty of Tsavo. Custom-equipped safari vehicles will be made available and your experienced guide who is well versed in the behavior patterns of terrestrial fauna will show you how to discern them in the camouflage they use to hide from predators.
Tsavo has many of these creatures and the most distinct are the lions with short, almost indistinguishable manes, some sharing the genes with the 19th-century man-eater lions of Tsavo. You might also see cheetahs, leopards, striped hyenas and smaller cats among others. Tsavo East is an ornithologist’s delight and boasts of more than 500 species of birds. Go birdwatching on this holiday tour of magical Kenya or on nature walks escorted by a seasoned naturalist.
You can also visit the Lugard Falls, Aruba Dam and the seasonal Voi River to spot crocodiles sunning themselves on the sandy banks and hippos wallowing in the water.
