GUIDE ON MAASAI TRAILS IN KENYA
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Maasai Trails
Reawaken the child in you as you wander along the Maasai trails in the Loita Naimina Enkiyio Forest on your exploratory bush-holiday in south-western Kenya (‘Loita’ translates into ‘the forest of the lost child’ in Maa language). At each step, a new wonder will unfold before you in the form of avian life like the oriole, turaco, tropical boubou, hornbill and many more. Your Maasai guide will show you how to identify them by name and will reveal all you would like to know about their habits. You might even spot black and white colobus monkeys in the verdant trees and listen to the sound of hyenas laughing in the forest. Walking safaris are the ideal way to explore the Masai Mara and understand its spirit because rather than just viewing animals, you will be able experience the scents of the wilderness, track animals by studying their spoor, examine broken eggshells to guess which bird or reptile hatched out of it and perhaps also learn about the almost magical healing powers of the plants and trees around you. Look out for tiny insects from antlions to dung beetles, and understand their part in the ecosystem. You may even spot birds’ nests skillfully hidden in the shrubs while touring this outback of the Masai Mara ecology. Your hosts on these trails are the Loita Maasai, fiercely protective about their customs and traditions, they have conceded to tourism and subtle modernization only because these factors help in preserving the stunning beauty of their world. Maasai Trails is the model example of one such accommodation for AfricanMecca guests traveling in Kenya that is prudently operated so that it has a minimal impact on the delicate biome. A modest walking establishment, it acts as a base for the many treks the Maasai organize, and is perched on a rocky crag facing the Loita Hills. It offers 3 Fusion Trail Huts that can accommodate two guests each and also include a private kitchenette and dining area. Maasai Trails also offers 2 Family Tents that are located on the outskirts of the forest and can accommodate six guests in all. These tents also come with a private kitchen, dining area and bathrooms. In all the entire camp can sleep twelve guests but on request, they can also put up extra tents for more guests. The walking trails you choose can vary for a time of four days on the Oityiani Trail to six days on the Great Rift Valley Trail. You can also opt for the Forest Trail or the Ol Lasur Trail each of which go on for 5 days. Donkeys will accompany you to carry your supplies and the staff takes care to have the camp sorted with sleeping and meal arrangements before your arrival so your stay is as comfortable as possible. Enjoy an authentic camping experience while vacationing in East Africa by sleeping in portable bed rolls which include a three-inch mattress, two sets of sheets, duvets, blankets and pillows. You will be using canvas washbasins and the trail staff carry along portable toilets for your use. As you spend time with your Loita Maasai hosts on your outskirt AfricanMecca trip in the wilds of Masai Mara, you will understand the deep reverence they have for the forest and as you traverse the trails their ancestors have walked on for centuries, the forest might reveal to you some of its many secrets (read more on the best time to visit Masai Mara in magical Kenya).
