Spread on the banks of the chocolate brown Mara River with hippos lying either submerged in the water or napping on the sand banks, is the Ashnil Mara Camp. The breezy, relaxed ambience of this safari camp is evident in the open reception, lounge, bar and restaurant areas. Elevated above the ground, these areas have canvas roofs with floors of hardwood and crazy stone. Only a low railing of crisscrossed tree trunks separates you from the lush tropical greenery outside that abounds with some of the 450 species of birds that thrive in the Masai Mara National Reserve.



The camp also has a covered patio off the restaurant where you can lounge in comfortable chairs while on your relaxing nature holiday on the plains of East Africa and watch the wildlife activity along the river. Well-maintained lawns with trees everywhere form the setting of the 40 tented rooms the camp offers frill guests traveling in this zone of south-western Kenya.

Made entirely of canvas on a flat wooden platform with a roll-up entrance, each tent is designed for your comfort with either twin or double beds. Mosquito netting is draped on the tree trunk, four posters around the bed while rugs with African motifs hug part of the hardwood floors. The en-suite bathroom comes with a shower stall, bathrobe, deluxe toiletries, hair dryer, washbasin and vanity area.



Your tented room also includes a small closet for storage, safety box, writing desk and standing fan while the patio has a round sofa-cum-daybed that again allows views of the river and the animals visiting it for a refreshing drink. Some of the tents are located at a distance from the main areas and your walks to your room are accompanied by a Maasai guard in the evenings interrupted by nocturnal sounds of bird and animal calls from the bush.

The camp's restaurant serves a varied selection of inter-continental and local cuisine complemented by wines, cocktails and beers, and you might also find Indian, continental and oriental fare. All meals are served buffet style, but they also cook stir fry and pasta dishes to your taste on the spot. The camp can set up a private bush breakfast for you beside the river so you can watch hippos in their pool while you eat.



If you intend to stay out longer on your morning game drives, you can request for a packed lunch. Wi-Fi services are available in the common areas.
