Nestled in a beautiful vale between the escarpments of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains is an exclusive, premier lodge that gives you the impression of being the only guests on a dream safari expedition in magical Kenya for miles around. And you may very well be because Solio Lodge is the only luxury accommodation on Solio Ranch, which covers a area of 45,000 acres. Your arrival at the lodge will be welcomed with friendly smiles, wet towels to refresh you and cool drinks. The resident bush baby, dubbed Murray-Anne might also stop by to say hello. Enter the lounge-cum-dining area and you will be awed by its size and splendor. The fireplace adds an element of homeliness along with the distinct artifacts and paintings scattered around that contribute to its muted elegance. On the top floor, you can purchase sustainable souvenirs to take home from your AfricanMecca vacation in southern Laikipia or lounge on the outside wooden veranda and watch the buffaloes, oryxes, impalas and zebras. Since the reserve is a world-renowned breeding reserve for rhinos, sighting over 40 rhinos is a regular phenomenon though there are no elephants here. Solio Game Reserve is fenced due to the protection of its breeding rhinos; therefore, there is no free flow of animal in and out of it wilderness, and some guests may not liken to the idea of a restricted wilderness even though accommodation on offer is a boutique experience. You will be accommodated in one of their 6 thatched roof villas. The back wall of the villas is made of glass according you stunning views of the outside forest and the peaks of Mount Kenya while a spacious patio in the front allows for relaxing moments. Each villa includes a bedroom and a lounge with a fireplace in both. Because of the altitude of the destination, the evenings can be a cool. Fires and candles are lit in the evenings adding to the warm romantic ambience. The staff also places hot water bottles in your bed for a cozy warm sleep on your East African slumber safari with rhinos snorting outside. The attached bathroom has a stand-alone bathtub standing against a glass panel, rain shower and twin washbasins with luxury toiletries specially formulated for the lodge. Slip into comfortable bathrobes and slippers after a refreshing, evening soak. Families traveling in Kenya can opt for the two-room villa that has connecting doors and can sleep five people at a time. Solio Lodge has its own vegetable patch where they grow organic produce. You will be treated to the delicious meals in the dining area or out on the deck underneath shaded trees. Have a hot breakfast of cereal, sausages, eggs and bread and three-course meals for lunch and dinner. Their Spanish soups, Asian curry and chapatis are favorites for dinner! Sign off with local honey and distinct Rooibos tea imported from Southern Africa. 19,000 acres of the ranch have been set aside as a reserve and game drives are organized twice in the day for you. Your experienced guide is an expert at gauging the movements of animals and will point out both black and white rhinos, warthogs, giraffes and predators like lions, cheetahs and leopards. Laikipia also has some 440 species of birds that are a delight to watch. Go on exciting night game drive trips or explore the conservancy on horseback. AfricanMecca guests can also experience guided bush walks or take an optional helicopter tour around the wild highlands of Mount Kenya. End your wilderness holiday days with drinks in the bush as you watch the sunset on the wonderful world of Laikipia.
