Lewa Conservancy is one of the first cattle ranches to be converted into a reserve for wildlife and a haven for the endangered black rhino and Grevy’s zebra. Located at an altitude of between 4,500 to 7,500 feet and part of eastern Laikipia in Kenya, Lewa has a very varied landscape of highlands, deep vales, grasslands, swamps and cedar forests. It supports a stunning array of wildlife and more than 440 species of birds. Lewa House has been established as a luxury accommodation for discerning holidaying in Laikipia amidst its untainted natural world. The house is constructed using naturally occurring materials and its architectural styles are such that it seems to be a part of its surroundings. High thatched roofs cover structures made of earth with natural stone detailing. The main house comprises of a spacious lounge-cum-dining area where a fire is lighted at dusk. Outside the house is a covered terrace with ample seating area from where guests can view the many animals coming to drink at the watering hole nearby. Lewa House has 3 distinct cottages for families traveling in Kenya with AfricanMecca, mirroring the building style of the main house. Every family cottage has two rooms with polished stone floors. The beds have mosquito netting and the entire furniture is constructed using rough wood giving the rooms a unique rustic charm. The attached bathroom comes with shower and handcrafted, organic toiletries. Relax and watch as the sun sets over Laikipia on the patio outside your room that also has a rock floor along with a thatched roof. There are also 4 “Earth Pods” cottages for romantic couples, honeymooners and solo travelers with its distinct architectural exterior design augmented by its shaded, private verandah and spacious interiors with wooden or polish stone floors. Queen-size beds with mosquito netting are integrated and three of the pod rooms have an al fresco bath. The lodge operates on ecofriendly principles -- solar panels create the electricity and rainwater is harvested for the lodge’s use. They also have their own kitchen garden to grow fruit and vegetables and the grains and other produce are sourced from the local farmer markets. The taste of the resulting mouthwatering dishes such as Beef vol-au-vents with Duchess potatoes and seasonal salads and Tilapia carpaccio served with sourdough toasts will remain with you long after you return home from your East African safari vacation. Their breakfast and lunch venues such as the green lawns, poolside or covered gardens add a special touch to the meals. Especially since you can expect visitors like the “go away birds” for tea and the resident genet, Jerry for coffee after dinner. Wildlife lovers will be impressed to learn that Lewa Conservancy has conservation programs in place that are the sole combined efforts of the like-minded people. As a result, wildlife numbers are thriving. You can go on game drives on your AfricanMecca photo tour of Laikipia accompanied by an expert naturalist. He will trail and visually theme out to you the Big Five of Africa, the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant. Beisa oryxes, gerenuks, Somali ostriches and reticulated giraffes are some of the species native to this area that you will see. Take all the photographs you want from your safari vehicle or from the aerial safari two-seater. Go on a horseback or camelback ride to explore the savannah. You can also go on bush walks under the supervision of an expert guide or visit the local Maasai people in their traditional homes nearby. Stay at Lewa House for a personalized trip to magical Kenya.
