GUIDE ON ELERAI CAMP IN KENYA

As part of the “Out of Africa Collection” of camps in Kenya, the Maasai partnered Elerai Camp is a 17-room deluxe boutique accommodation for your exclusive wildlife safari in Amboseli National Park. Set within a remote section bordering the southeastern portion of the park, the nostalgic neo-design of the accommodation is reminiscent of the camps that were used by Kenya’s earliest explorers, and the hillside location gives you breathtaking views of the savannah plains and mighty snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Advantageously, the luxury camp is located in the private conservancy of Elerai thus affording AfricanMecca guests access to nature walks, Maasai village visits and night game drives within the dense conservancy. In the adjacent Amboseli National Park, the landscape is largely arid, and the only water sources are wetlands in the center of the park that are fed by underground runoff from Africa’s tallest mountain. Wildlife congregates in these areas, including the elephant that have made Amboseli Park a top safari destination for the discerning traveler in East Africa. The photographic opportunities are almost endless, but the most elegant composition is of a mother elephant and her baby gently touching trunks in a demonstration of affection with Mount Kilimanjaro in the backdrop. Lions, cheetahs, leopards and other elusive predators are present, and may require more time to track especially when the grasses are long, and most of the movements on the plains are giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas and other grazing herbivore. The Elerai conservancy together with Amboseli Park are the unspoiled bases for your exploratory bird-watching holiday in southern Kenya, as saddle bill stork, yellow throated sand grouse, Egyptian goose and grey heron are just some of the 425 species of avi-fauna that you may locate and identify during your wilderness trip. Elerai Camp offers five chalet-style guest suites that are designed with natural stone and acacia wood, and feature ensuite bathrooms with bathtub, as well as private verandas. Constructed of acacia poles, cedar wood floors, thatch roof and other native materials, the twelve tents evoke the boutique romance of East Africa with unobstructed views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Refreshing breezes keep you cool and comfortable, and the full en-suite bathroom with solar-heated hot water shower gives you a private space to prepare for your wilderness tour of Amboseli National Park. You truly feel immersed in your surroundings when you awaken to the majesty of Kilimanjaro. A scrumptious breakfast awaits you in the restaurant, and then you meet your guide for a morning game drive. The experience and expertise of your AfricanMecca guide are apparent as he takes you to vantage points where vervet monkey, yellow baboon and olive baboon hide in the foliage, and in the distance you hear the distinct howls of hyenas. At the swamps, watch out for egrets on top of bathing elephants, and your guide’s intimate knowledge of the park may lead you to the rarest birds of prey - Taita Falcon and Southern-Banded Harrier Eagle. After a superb lunch at camp, you retire to your private veranda for a nap or a cool-off swim before afternoon tea and a second game drive or Maasai-guided nature walk. End your day in Amboseli with a sunset cocktail on top of the Elerai Hill and dinner in a secluded corner of the dining expanse. A cultural visit to a local untainted Maasai village can also be a part of your authentic experiential vacation in Kenya.
