FUNZI ISLAND BEACH HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE IN KENYA
Funzi Island is known primarily for its tranquil beaches and seclusion on the South Coast of Mombasa, but as you explore the island you also find mangrove forests, mixed forests and wetlands, making Funzi one of the most diverse islands that you may ever visit in Kenya, and with only 1500 people living on the island, you are able to feel a sense of isolation within nature.
AfricanMecca Safaris recommends that you meet with the Kenya Sea Turtle Conservation Trust, a group that works to protect and preserve the habitat of the five sea turtle species that depend on the island for food and nesting, including Green, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill and Loggerhead and some of these ocean-life are categorized as critically endangered or endangered by the World Conservation Union.
From end of June through December, humpback whales migrate along the Kenyan Coast, and some of these magnificent marine fauna may be observed while on boating trip on the outskirts of Funzi Island and also around Kisite and Mpunguti Islands. Additionally, boat excursions take you to the most distinct areas along Funzi Creek and Ramisi River where you can see crocodile and varied avi-fauna.
For aquatic sports lovers, AfricanMecca recommends sailing, kayaking, canoeing, angling around the coastline of Funzi and world-class deep sea fishing too! The island is also near Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, a haven for snorkelers and divers with more than 360 fish species and over 45 types of coral. There is also a striking sandbank that opens up in the middle of the azure ocean opposite the Funzi Keys – a rustic family managed boutique accommodation located on the island. The sandbank is perfect for idyllic sunbathing, relaxing breakfast and lunch picnics and swimming too.
