PEPONI HOTEL IN LAMU
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Peponi Hotel
Since 1967, the family-owned and operated Peponi Hotel on Lamu Island has been a favorite mid-range, deluxe accommodation among those who are seeking an ideal beach vacation in Kenya. Over the years, this Shela hotel has maintained its trademark small size so that every guest receives excellent personal service. A total of 29 guest rooms are available in several sizes, including standard, superior and suites, and every room has a stunning view of the Indian Ocean, mosquito netting, personal safes, shower-only bathrooms and ceiling fans, as well as freshly cut flowers. The larger superior rooms and suites are situated in a special area on the property and have private verandas with sway beds for rocking yourself to sleep while ocean breezes cool you after a day of activity-rich coastal touring on Lamu Island with AfricanMecca. A family size room easily accommodates parents with children, and the centrally located room has a private staircase, two patios, deck and easy access to common areas. The rooms that are further away from the beach are up a slight hill, but offer the most privacy, and the room above the bar and restaurant can be slightly boisterous as this small resort also allows walk-in day visitors for a drink and meal. There are, though, few experiences that you will have on your tranquil seaside holiday on the Indian Ocean that exceed the delight of being lulled to sleep by the sound of gentle waves over the sand, so you may wish to request a room that is close to the water’s edge. Peponi Hotel has a reputation of hosting many repeat guests for over almost five decades of island hospitality, some celebrities, others small-time royals but most are ordinaries like us, and sometimes, the repeat guest’s pomposity of a regular annual boarder and first preference expectation comes into firing by demanding newcomers. The well-prepared edible creations of the Peponi Hotel have been lauded in international publications, including the New York Times, and soon as you sample your first morsel, you will agree with us. The breakfast, lunch and dinner menus feature a unique blend of traditional Swahili, sushi and fresh seafood that will have your mouth watering hours before you dine. You even have some incredible venues to choose from to enhance your appetite-inducing beach travel on the Indian Ocean, such as a rooftop terrace, formal dining room and under the darkened African skies that are filled with twinkling stars, and we recommend that you try the house cocktail known as “Old Pal.” For the quieter parts of your day, the gardens offer an exceptional place to wander and enjoy glamorous and tropical flora, and should you need to rest during your house tour, you need only to find one of the many hammocks that sway in the breeze under a coconut palm. With more than seven miles of beach at your doorstep, AfricanMecca guests are sure to have a high-energy ocean trip in East Africa where you can partake deep sea fishing, dhow sailing, fishing, snorkeling and many other aquatic activities (read more on when is the best time to visit Lamu). Be sure to take time to learn about the important Lamu Marine Conservation Trust that has actively worked on the island to preserve the precious ecosystems through education, advocacy, marine turtle tag and release program and local school programs for tree planting on the islands.

AfricanMecca Safari could not have been more helpful through the entire process of planning our trip to Kenya. Our trip to Lamu (a suggestion by Raza) was incredible, and Kizingo is a perfect place to stay there. All in all, we had an amazing time in Kenya.
Jordan Klein & Anna Kohanski - New York, United States
Lamu was fabulous. hot and sunny and we again were delighted with our accommodation. Everything was run smoothly and without any hitches and we are most grateful for a truly memorable holiday of a life time. You organised everything efficiently which made life so easy for us.
Angela Cook - London, United Kingdom
I had just the BEST time in Lamu - quite probably the holiday of my life - and am determined to go back in November. I have to say, the holiday was made by Altaf's dedication to what I needed - he worked very hard to ensure I got the full ten night stay at Kipungani, and I was impressed to say the least. Many thanks - I'll be back.
Jeremy King, Senior Producer GMTV - London, United Kingdom
Raza, I have returned from the trip to Kenya you arranged. It went quite well and all of your advice about hotels etc was correct and prevented me from doing things less than optimal. I really enjoyed Lamu; it is one of the best beaches I have seen.

Raza, I want to tell you that all aspects of our travel arrangements with you ran smoothly. Our visit to Lamu was most enjoyable and a pleasant contrast to the highlands. I will unreservedly recommend AfricanMecca to others.
