Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Kijani Hotel Lamu
The reasonable Kijani Hotel at Shela on Lamu Island immerses you in traditional Swahili living with 10 guest rooms that are located within three structures that were previously used as private residences (read more on where else to stay in Lamu on your Kenyan coastal holiday). While at the hotel, you enjoy basic, modest conveniences, such as personal safe, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom and garden or sea-facing private veranda, all on a three-quarter acre property of lush gardens where you are embraced by the vibrant colors of bougainvillea, frangipani and other tropical flora during every moment of your seaside holiday on Lamu Island with AfricanMecca. Traditional flat and part thatch roofs, coral walls and stone ceilings with wooden beams reflect the traditional Swahili architecture that has made Lamu Island a World Heritage Site. Each of the three suites and seven rooms are individually-appointed with beautiful wood accents, canopied beds and windows to bring in the soft natural light. To have the full affect of the island’s character while you are coastally traveling in this part of laidback Kenya, request a room with views of sailing dhows, fishing boats and locals going about their day. The room above the admin workplace is quite spacious. The property is shy of light at night, so we recommend that you bring a small flashlight to move around this house hotel. You should also note that the rooms are not air conditioned (only fans exist), and to ensure that you have a comfortable seashore vacation on the Indian Ocean, you should request a room on the upper levels to take full advantage of the ocean breeze. Note the accommodation is not located on the beach but overlooks the ocean. The closest beach is near Peponi Hotel. The restaurant only serves a simple breakfast that includes locally sourced eggs and honey, freshly baked bread, yogurt and marmalade and the a la carte dinner menu features a selection of grilled fish and pasta. For a romantic evening, you may request your dinner be served in your room and dining on your private veranda is a spectacular experience. The budget-friendly Kijani Hotel leaves plenty of room for a self-directed beach tour activities of Lamu Island that may include windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling, dhow sailing tours, deep sea fishing, to name only a few of your options. Dolphin sighting is a favorite activity for a thrilling ocean trip in East Africa, and these marine mammals are typically found near Lamu Island from September through March. Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an AfricanMecca guided walking tour from Kijani is a must during your time on the island. Your guide will take you to the Lamu Fort and the old town alleys of this unique island. Thereafter, visit the Lamu Museum to see displays of artifacts, jewelry and other significant cultural, natural and archaeological finds. After your tour of the museum, you can walk to Shela to tour the residential alleys and the well-known Friday Mosque that was built in 1829 and is easily recognizable by its distinct minaret (read more on when is the best time to visit Lamu in Kenya).

AfricanMecca Safari could not have been more helpful through the entire process of planning our trip to Kenya. Our trip to Lamu (a suggestion by Raza) was incredible, and Kizingo is a perfect place to stay there. All in all, we had an amazing time in Kenya.

Lamu was fabulous. hot and sunny and we again were delighted with our accommodation. Everything was run smoothly and without any hitches and we are most grateful for a truly memorable holiday of a life time. You organised everything efficiently which made life so easy for us.
Angela Cook - London, United Kingdom
I had just the BEST time in Lamu - quite probably the holiday of my life - and am determined to go back in November. I have to say, the holiday was made by Altaf's dedication to what I needed - he worked very hard to ensure I got the full ten night stay at Kipungani, and I was impressed to say the least. Many thanks - I'll be back.
Jeremy King, Senior Producer GMTV - London, United Kingdom
Raza, I have returned from the trip to Kenya you arranged. It went quite well and all of your advice about hotels etc was correct and prevented me from doing things less than optimal. I really enjoyed Lamu; it is one of the best beaches I have seen.
Dr Thomas Walshe - Boston, Massachusetts - United States
Raza, I want to tell you that all aspects of our travel arrangements with you ran smoothly. Our visit to Lamu was most enjoyable and a pleasant contrast to the highlands. I will unreservedly recommend AfricanMecca to others.
