AfricanMecca’s Service Was To Perfection For Masai Mara Safari & Diani Beach
AfricanMecca’s Service Was To Perfection For Masai Mara Safari & Diani Beach
Our trip was fantastic. I had been to South Africa a few years before. Kenya was so much better. It was safer, friendlier, prettier, most important, it was the safari you dream of. The animals are wild, and they were everywhere. In total, we probably saw over a million animals. It’s an experience I don’t think you can get anywhere else in the world.
We went on the 13th of July, so rainy season had just ended. We spent a few days on the beach, south coast of Mombasa, at the Diani Reef Resort. Turquoise water, almost deserted beach, no tacky beach shops like in the state. The jungle comes right up to the beach so just a beautiful view in every direction.
Not a piece of trash in site. When the tide went out, there was a huge tidal pool where you could walk around, see all kinds of shells, octopus, crabs etc. We played beach volleyball every afternoon, and took a beautiful long walk down the beach at sunset each night. There were “beach boys” local men and women selling handcrafts, but if you didn’t want them to bother you, they were generally very respectful. I did have great conversations with a few.
We went scuba diving two days, always great. Visibility was good, 30-40 ft (10 meters) even when it was raining up top one day. We saw florescent coral, a good size sea turtle, a leaf fish, and a guitar ray on one dive. All cool Indian Ocean stuff we don’t have in the US.
Our safari to Masai Mara was the best. We couldn’t believe the number of animals we saw. Literally hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras (migration). For anyone that saw Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, we were in the spot where the wildebeest come down the steep bank, cross the river and the crocodile jumps out of the water and pulls the wildebeest under, and WE SAW IT happen.
Dozens of elephants, zebras, and many hyena. Two herds of mongoose, a total surprise. We saw two cheetahs, one mom with babies, and one resting from a fresh kill. One rhino. We saw 2 dozen lions, and when we saw how well they were camouflaged in the grass, we saw why you don’t get out of the jeep.
Our tented safari was great, don’t plan on sleeping the first night. You will be up listening to the animal sounds half the night. The food was great. Our guide was great. We had a jeep and driver for just our family. We took a 15 year old boy who CAN still be impressed. He had a great time. We did the tour of the Masai village, and a Masai talk at the camp which was fascinating.
My son’s comments which sum it up the best. Quoting as best I can – “The people here are so nice and work so hard to make sure we are having a good time. I’ve never seen anyone where we live be like that.” “They are so proud of what they have. It’s cool. I have friends that complain about what they don’t have. Over here, they are proud of their houses, even made of sticks and cow pooh, and they are so friendly.” The last night in Mombasa, as he walked around the pool, jumping off the beautiful limestone walls – “I’m really going to miss this place. This is the best vacation we’ve ever had. I could live here.”
AfricanMecca’s service was impeccable. They handled my numerous schedule changes with no problems. At one point, pushing that 30 day airline deadline, I wanted to make one last change. When I called, where you always get a live person answering, they said they couldn’t confirm the hotel availability until morning as it was the middle of the night in Mombasa just then. We talked for a few minutes, then I heard the sound of the best customer service response ever – “If it’s really important to get the confirmation right now, I have the cell phone number of the hotel manager. I’ll call and wake him up”. He did, right then.
AfricanMecca’s people checked with us at the hotel, in person, the day before every transfer. We never had to worry about anything. They were prompt, very friendly, accommodating every wish. I have never seen such a well run operation. FYI – I have been a quality systems auditor for the last 15 years. I travel all the time. AfricanMecca’s service is extraordinary.
FYI – I am a quality systems auditor. I find faults for living. AfricanMecca’s service was to perfection. Thank you for everything.
