Fantastic Time At Ashnil Mara Camp In Masai Mara Reserve

My husband and I had returned from a fantastic time at Ashnil Mara Camp in the Masai Mara National Reserve. We saw everything (except rhino)! Including two leopards in one day! We ate like pigs and had a very comfortable stay. I sincerely AfricanMecca Safaris for recommending Ashnil Mara camp, and plan to recommend you and the camp at the next opportunity! My husband and I stayed at Ashnil Mara camp in Masai Mara, arriving Thursday afternoon, June 30 2011, and departing late morning on Monday, July 4 2011. I arranged the booking through Raza Visram of AfricanMecca Safaris, who had recommended Ashnil Mara to me based on my interests and budget. Raza was very easy to work with, personable, and knowledgeable. Raza was direct and timely with communication, and provided me with everything we needed to be prepared for our trip. I highly recommend him and would work with him again to plan another safari adventure. Raza is responsive to the client’s particular interests.

We were very pleased with our stay at Ashnil Mara Camp. Our drives were very successful and we saw many animals – including leopards and lions – as our driver took us to all the right places. The 4×4 was new, spacious, comfortable, and handled the terrain well. This is extremely important for safari/game drive. Our tent at the camp was spacious, comfortable, and clean, directly overlooking the Mara River.

We had hippos and crocodiles immediately outside our room (separated by fence and river bank of course). Our tent was several units from the main hall, which we were very happy about after we had been there for a day. According to other guests, the tents nearest the main hall are subject to the noises of the kitchen, which start very early in the morning! They are currently building a spa, I think, which will be a nice way to spend downtime between game drives.

The dining area at the Ashnil Mara camp has pleasing décor; it is open on all sides, but with flaps to pull down for rain. There is an outdoor fire pit and a bar. The meals are served from a buffet that has several different stations. There were many food options, including meat, fish, and vegetarian. As a vegetarian, I did not feel as though I was eating “sides”; there were ample mains for vegetarians and I enjoyed the multiple salads. While there were several tempting desserts each night, if they could, I would have enjoyed more fresh fruit options.

The box lunches for our game drives were just as plentiful as the buffet breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at the hotel. The staff at the dining hall, kitchen, and bar was very pleasant and engaged, and provided attentive service. There is also wi-fi at the hotel, which – fortunately or unfortunately – is an absolute necessity. My only suggestion is that $15/day is a bit pricey, especially considering it cuts out. But in the end, they did not charge me for every day, so it was fine.

Overall, the Ashnil Mara Camp had a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. The other guests – generally families – were pleasant and friendly. This was not a “party” place, and we were very pleased with that.

I highly recommend AfricanMecca Safaris & Ashnil Mara tented camp as a relaxing and enjoyable place to stay for a fantastic nature and wildlife experience in the Masai Mara.
