In respect to banks, the best place is to go is either a major bank such or even the local banks in smaller towns. Traveler checks and most major credit cards are widely accepted in Tanzania. Some businesses charge a service fee when credit cards are used. Banking hours are generally from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and some on Saturday mornings. Banks at some airports are open for longer hours. Tanzania currency denominations come in 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000, 10000 notes.
The unit of currency is the Tanzania shilling (Tsh) divided in to 100 cents. Travelers may bring in and take out of the country U.S. $10,000.00 without declaration. Banks, hotels, and authorized exchange bureaus are the only places in Tanzania to change money legally. Private currency transactions and trading on the black market are illegal.
